HeavenlyFoam® Mattress Company

CIIP: Hi Scott. Thank you for inviting us to your home for this interview. Can you please give us a brief introduction about WHO you are and WHAT your purpose is for living in Changzhou?

SCOTT ALTMAN :Thank you for coming! With guests like you visiting, my house truly becomes a home. I am an American businessman, entrepreneur and real estate investor. I first came to Changzhou in the year 2001. At the time I was running a fashion company, making apparel for infants and ladies. During the period from 2001-2005, I would spend long periods staying at the Changzhou Grand Hotel, while managing various projects. The working conditions were difficult, internet spotty and my productivity suffered. In 2006 I decided to buy an apartment here, in the new Xinbei district, so I could comfortably and productively operate. Purchasing this property led to the start of the Heavenly Foam Mattress Company because I wanted the highest quality furnishings in my home here. Our engineers found this dynamic sleeping tool that was developed originally for the USA space exploration program. So we utilize not only space age technology, but patented construction techniques so that our customers are able to achieve the best sleep possible. This mattress uses advanced high density visco-elastic foam, which we get from Germany and USA. Our family of happy customers is mixed between local Chinese and foreign visitors to China, but we also have customers in USA. We ship all over China.

CIIP: Your home has 3 levels with a lovely garden level on the top and 4 bedrooms, can you tell us more about your family situation? Does your family visit you here in Changzhou ?

SCOTT ALTMAN : I live alone here in Changzhou. My family lives in New York, California and Florida.

CIIP: I suppose I am asking about your history in deciding why you made your home in Changzhou . How much time do you actually spend in Changzhou?

SCOTT ALTMAN :My work has been bouncing around from China to USA every few months. In between I also travel throughout Asia. I spend as much time as I can in Changzhou for business, friends and food.

CIIP: You live in the Xinbei district, what changes are most notable for you in the city?
SCOTT ALTMAN :I was initially concerned with the destruction of Old Changzhou to build all the new buildings. However the progress is good. There are now many more places to eat, shop for food and go for entertainment. I am also excited about the coming underground subway system.

CIIP: How difficult was it for you to establish a small business in Changzhou? And would you encourage others to do so?

SCOTT ALTMAN :It is not difficult to establish a business here at all. There is a lot of information available on requirements for various business types. Paperwork is in English. But there does not appear to be a Small Business Office, designed for helping foreigners. I hope it can improve in the future. I would encourage others to try. Finding a good lawyer and having good contacts in the community has proven critical.

CIIP: What changes do you think would be most important for others following your path?

SCOTT ALTMAN :Never let anyone talk you out of what you determine to be a good opportunity or idea. If you believe in it and are passionate, others will soon agree. Those that don’t will have to watch you succeed from the sidelines.

CIIP: Do you believe that Changzhou is a place where foreign owned small businesses can really take root? If not why? If yes, why?

SCOTT ALTMAN :Yes. However, there are so many barriers to entry. It often appears that the local government and the small business owner do not share common goals because they are not familiar with each other. Once that bridge is crossed, the cooperation and friendship flourishes.

CIIP: What do you like MOST and what do you like LEAST about Changzhou?
SCOTT ALTMAN :I like the people. My neighbors have become like my family. I have many friends and colleagues here. I like the food, the parks and the ever expanding choices of entertainment. I would like to see more cultural events, and more events for foreigners to meet local government decision makers.

CIIP: Thank you for accepting this interview Scott, your home is truly beautiful!
